What’s Your Oil Temperature?
Once an engine overheats, piston and lubricating oil temperatures also increase which leads to an increase in engine oil breakdown as well as an increase in accumulation of piston carbon deposits. Generally, for each 20°F (11°C) of temperature increase, the chemical reaction rate that produces carbon deposits is doubled.
At the other end of the thermometer is an overcooled engine. When this happens, condensation accumulates in the engine oil which causes additives to drop out, resulting in the possibility of clogged filters. Condensation, which is considered to be a natural occurrence during the combustion process, does not completely vaporize and exit through the breather if the engine is overcooling.
