Buying a 20 year old car has its risks so it’s wise to have them inspected first. If you don’t you may be surprised by immediate problems. SureTrack community member patriot tech had a 2001 Audi A4 in the shop that wouldn’t start and the new owners knew nothing about the car. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member Richard_C and others, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Community Fix summarizes the interaction between members of the community that led to the solution.

Vehicle
2001 Audi A4 1.8L

Title
No start Audi, replaced fuse 7.

Complaint
Customer states that vehicle won’t start.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Car was dropped off for a no start condition. Customer was unaware of any previous repairs and bought the car on sight without any inspection. I have no communication with any modules. Car cranks fine but no spark or injector pulse. Weird thing is when I turn on the key the message board in the instrument cluster says “push in clutch to start”, but this vehicle is an automatic. Tried bypassing PCM relays with no luck. PCM looks original, no fingerprints or junk yard markings on it. Need to know where to go from here.

Green 7 on data link to green/red 47 on ECU. Check power to the ECU also. Fuse 12 10A too which is power for the data link. Also check grounds on ECU.

Cause
Ended up being a blown fuse #7, which powers the Motronic Engine Control Module. Did not find cause of blown fuse. Further diagnosis will be done if issue returns.

Correction
Replaced fuse 7 and vehicle started up and purrs like a kitten.
