Owners of 2004-2009 Chevy Trailblazer, Hummer H3 and 2004-2012 Colorado vehicles might complain about an engine belt noise, a rough idle and/or SES light on. DTC P0014 and/or P0017 might be stored.
If a rough idle is experienced, P0106 might also be stored. If the routine diagnosis does not isolate the cause of the concern, inspect the camshaft actuator solenoid screens.
If any of these screens are missing, replace the camshaft actuator solenoid, change the engine oil and filter and re-evaluate the concern. If none of the screens are missing, proceed as follows:
Measure the crankshaft end play. The specification is 0.0044 inches to 0.0153 inches. If the end play is only 0.001-inch or so above spec, it is probably not the cause of the concern. If crank end play is excessive, engine replacement is recommended.
