Ask Keith Benline the secret to building a successful repair shop, and he probably won’t start by talking about cars. He’ll start by talking about people.
“Shop owners need to think about where this industry is going a year, two years or five years from now,” said Benline, owner of A+ Autocare in Poway, California. “But at the same time, you’ve got to work on your people skills to keep employees and customers happy.ā
It’s a philosophy that has guided Benline throughout his career, from learning the trade alongside his father to building A+ Autocare into one of Southern California’s most successful independent repair shops.
Those principles have fueled more than two decades of growth and continue to shape the way he leads his business today.
Great Shops Are Built Around Great People
For all of Benline’s enthusiasm about technology, he believes the most important investment a shop owner can make isn’t software or equipment. It’s people. “We spend so much time talking about KPIs, efficiency and technology,” he said. “Then we turn around and ask why we can’t find good technicians.”
For Benline, the answer often comes down to culture. “I want my employees to feel like they’re family,” he said. “Most technicians will stay if they know they’ll have steady work, a great environment and a boss who appreciates them. If they feel like they’re part of the team, they’ll give you everything they’ve got.”
That philosophy influences every decision he makes.
“I always ask myself, ‘When my employees wake up Monday morning, what are they thinking?'” Benline said. “I want them to think, ‘I’m going to one of the best places I’ve ever worked. I like theĀ people. I feel respected. I feel like I’m part of something.'”
Creating that kind of workplace isn’t just good leadership, noted Benline. It’s good business. Employees who feel valued stay longer, provide better customer service and help create the kind of culture customers notice the moment they walk through the front door.
From Consultant to Shop Owner

That passion eventually led him into automotive management consulting, where he spent years helping independent repair shops improve profitability, operations and customer service.
One of those consulting clients eventually offered him the opportunity to purchase his first shop. “I’d been consulting with him for about five years,” Benline recalled. “I knew the business, I knew the people and I felt confident I could help it grow.”
To make the purchase happen, Benline took out a second mortgage on his home and bought the Pacific Beach shop in 2003. By then, monthly sales had fallen from approximately $150,000 to about $100,000. Employee morale had slipped, and the previous owner was no longer actively involved in the business. Rather than making sweeping operational changes, Benline focused first on
“When I came in, it was like a shot in the arm for everybody,” he said. “The employees already knew me from my consulting work, but I wanted them to know I wasn’t just a business consultant. I’m a person like they are, and we’re going to rebuild this business together.”
Within just a few months, the shop had returned to its previous sales levels.
“You can have the best systems in the world,” Benline said, “but if your people aren’t engaged, none of it matters.”
That lesson would prove even more valuable nearly two decades later.
A+ Autocare: Building Another Success Story
In early 2020, Benline purchased A+ Autocare in Poway just as the COVID pandemic was beginning to disrupt businesses everywhere. At the time of the acquisition, annual sales had fallen from $1.85 million in 2010 to $1.5 million, reflecting a decade of slowing business.

Today, A+ Autocare operates from a 7,500-square-foot facility with eight service lifts, an alignment rack and a team of four technicians, two service advisors and support staff.
Five years later, annual sales increased nearly 80 percent, from approximately $1.5 million to $2.7 million. For Benline, that growth wasn’t driven by one major change. It came from continuously improving every part of the business.
“People have more information than ever before,” he said. “They’re researching repairs before they ever pick up the phone. If you don’t adapt to how customers want to do business today, someone else will.”
Trust Is Your Best Marketing Tool

“They’re looking for information,” he said. “They’re trying to find a shop they can trust.”
Instead of resisting that trend, Benline embraces it. While every repair still requires proper diagnosis, he believes providing reasonable pricing guidance helps build confidence instead of creating hesitation.
“Years ago, shops were told never to give a ballpark estimate. Today, if you refuse to provide any information, the customer is going to hang up and call someone else.”
Benline credits Mitchell 1’s ProDemandĀ® auto repair information, Manager⢠SE shop management and SocialCRM marketing solutions with helping modernize the customer experience while improving efficiency throughout the repair process.

His commitment to transparency extends beyond pricing.
“If someone leaves a negative review, I reach out and invite them to contact me so we can make it right,” he said.
A+ Autocare has earned approximately 1,300 verified five-star reviews through SocialCRMās SureCritic⢠services and more than 300 Google reviews averaging 4.9 stars.
“Those reviews become your evidence,” Benline said. “When people see one bad review alongside hundreds of great ones, they recognize it’s the exception, not the rule.”
For Benline, transparency isn’t about being the lowest-priced shop. It’s about earning trust before the customer ever walks through the door.
Technology Should Eliminate Bottlenecks
As A+ Autocare continued growing, Benline discovered that every successful business eventually finds its next bottleneck. For him, it wasn’t attracting customers. It was building estimates.
“When you get those complex repairs with five or six recommendations, estimates can really slow you down,” Benline noted, “especially when our service advisors are answering phones, helping customers at the counter and trying to build estimates at the same time.”

Powered by the Snap-onĀ® Digital Engine, OneFlow Estimator taps into billions of validated repair records along with millions of Mitchell 1 labor times and OEM parts to auto-match parts, labor and related services to every quote.
“When I started using OneFlow Estimator at my shop, I thought, ‘This is where the industry needs to go,'” Benline said. “Technology shouldn’t replace people. It should eliminate repetitive work so we can spend more time helping customers.”
The Real Secret to Success

Successful shops will always be built by leaders who invest in their employees, earn their customers’ trust and embrace technology that solves real problems. For him, that’s the real secret to long-term success.
Technology like OneFlow Estimator isn’t the destination. It’s another tool that empowers great people to deliver an even better customer experience. In an industry built on relationships, Benline believes that’s what will continue to separate good repair shops from great ones.
Ā Beyond the Shop
When he’s not operating A+ Autocare, Benline enjoys a busy family life on his five-acre property in Bonsall, California. He and his wife, Kelly, have been married for 36 years and have three daughters and six grandchildren.
Benline is deeply involved in his community, serving for the past eight years as troopmaster and committee chair for Trail Life USA Troop CA-0112 in Fallbrook, as well as president of his 19-home homeowners association. “The neighbors won’t let me resign, and neither will the Trail Life parents,” he says with a laugh.
When time allows, Benline enjoys playing bass guitar, guitar and piano, singing, golfing, gardening and tackling handyman projects around the property.
