Who Doesn’t Want to Maximize Tire Life Expectancy?
Experienced fleet tire managers work hard to maximize the tread life of fleet vehicle tires. Several tools are available to help them ensure their fleets are getting the most out of their tires.
Automatic tire inflation systems are available for trailers and tractors. By continually maintaining correct inflation pressures, these systems help extend tire life and increase safety. Some automatic tire inflation systems integrate with TPM technology. For example, the Aeris SmartSense™ allows remote monitoring of trailer tire pressures on both coupled and un-coupled trailers.
Regular checks of tire and wheel balance are an essential part of tire maintenance. While the wheels are off for other services (such as brakes), perform tire rotations. In addition, regularly inspect all suspension components, such as bushings, shock absorbers, wheel bearings, tie rods, and axle U-bolts to maximize tire tread life.
One final tool in the fleet tire manager’s arsenal is the computerized wheel alignment machine. Keeping front axle alignment, rear/tandem and trailer alignment within specifications will help ensure maximum tire life and safe vehicle operation.
