Technicians always want to complete the repairs of a customer vehicle but sometimes that doesn’t happen for various reasons. SureTrack community member rsm110 had a Ford F250 Super Duty in their shop where the sunroof wouldn’t open. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community member DAG1365, and others, they were able to find the cause but the customer declined the repair.

The following Real Fix summarizes the interaction between them in the community that led to the solution.

2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty 6.7L

Stuck sunroof, damaged sunroof track.

Customer complains that sunroof won’t open.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Checked sunroof operation and can intermittently control sun shade. Cannot open sunroof. When I hit close switch, can hear motor bump but no operation. Tested power and ground to motors. Replaced both sun shade and sunroof motors. Then tried to initiate but will not open to perform operation.

Had one that sunroof was not aligned correctly, removed sunroof and checked system all worked, aligned best possible and got to work like should.

Removed sunroof glass and plastic covers and found a small piece of plastic had broke off track and had got caught in the groove that lets the glass drop to slide back. The plastic is a piece broken off the track. Due to the expense of replacing the track assembly, customer decided not to repair. Side note, after plastic was removed, sunroof does work but just won’t stop correctly. We had to manually line the glass up with the roof with an allen key in the motor.

Replacement of track assembly would fix problem but customer declined repair.
